MEETING MINUTES for FEBRUARY 14, 2009   

 

The meeting convened at 2:00 P.M. in the Juliette Hampton Morgan Library, 245 High Street, Montgomery - Second Floor Auditorium

 

1) Welcome and HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY from 2009 Chapter President Shirley Ann Rawls.

 

2) Introduction of four of the candidates running to be the next mayor of Montgomery*.

March 10th is election day. The candidates discussed their platforms and took from the audience.

3) Rhonda Wright was elected Montgomery NOW Secretary for 2009 by acclamation.

 

4) Treasurer's Report: Elaine could not be present; will e-mail it.

 

5) WHAT'S GOING ON:   :-)

Thanks to Amy Carr for hosting an excellent house party for President Obama's inauguration.

 

Amy Applegate Reports that the clinic has been mobbed with protesters recently. She speculates that this is because of anti-choice frustration with

President Obama's election and inauguration.

 

Diaper Bank project: Shirley talked with the Sunshine Center to ask where we could help. Members also raised the need for temporary foster homes for pets, which the shelter cannot accept.

 

Hate Vigil tomorrow, Feb 15th....

 

Lily Ledbetter Day? May partner with ACLU to have her speak at the AL Capitol.

 

A few minor changes this year...2009 for MGM NOW...

  • Shirley introduced new officers

  • ... and thanked Amy and her team for a great 2008

  • We will meet every OTHER month.

  • Schedule on website and business cards.

  • Our meetings will be working meetings

  • Non-meeting months will be activist months.

SUGGESTIONS RECEIVED:

Membership, Partnership & Community Service

Most agreed that we need to be more visible in the community with

a major fundraising and more community involvement


MEMBERSHIP DRIVE: STARTING HERE, STARTING NOW....

  • Free NOW T-shirt with membership. Suggestions for other incentives welcome.

  • Take brochures, business cards and spread the word, put on every bulletin board in the tri-county area.

  • Shirley has received an inactive members list from National NOW. We will be contacting them to find out why they became inactive.

CELEBRATE VALENTINE'S DAY....DOOR PRIZES AND JUST PLAIN FUN!!!

The candidates stayed to mingle with the members – many good discussions as a result. We thank them for their time and attention!
