MEMO to the Montgomery Chapter Membership MARCH 2009 FROM: Elaine Fuller, coordinator of the Diaper Bank Phone: 334-263-3729 - E-mail address: elainefuller@mindspring.com
At Montgomery NOW’s December meeting we decided to sponsor a Diaper Bank. In essence, a Diaper Bank distributes unopened boxes of disposable diapers for children through existing organizations that serve the needs of low-income families and know which families are in need of which sizes of diapers.
The Diaper Bank gets diapers from organizations of any type that are willing to conduct a diaper drive among their members or customers; or include a one-time diaper collection as part of some event they are sponsoring. Money contributions from individuals for the purchase of diapers are, of course, always welcome.
A healthy change of diapers can cost up to $140 a month for one infant who uses up to 12 diapers per day and programs such as Food Stamps, WIC and child care subsidies do not cover their cost. Low income households often use far fewer diapers than they should, thus increasing the risk of health problems for their children
WHAT CAN NOW MEMBERS DO TO SUPPORT THIS PROJECT? 1. You can make a presentation to whatever church, organization, group or business you belong to asking it to sponsor a diaper drive or include a diaper collection in some event it is undertaking. The Diaper Bank can provide you with brochures, flyers and diaper collection from some central location.
2. You can give us suggestions and contact information for agencies and organizations that would be possible distributors of the diapers; that is, agencies that work with low-income families on a regular basis. The Gift of Life Foundation is already interested.
3. You can make an individual cash donation by writing a check to Montgomery NOW and putting ‘diaper bank’ in the FOR LINE. Send the check to Montgomery NOW, P.O. 231011, Montgomery, AL 36123-1011.
