MEETING MINUTES for August 14, 2010

Meeting convened at 1:30 P.M. at the Juliette Hampton Morgan Library, 245 High Street

 

Abbreviated minutes (secretary out of town):

1)  Joe Hubbard, one of the two candidates running for Montgomery's House District #73, addressed the chapter at this meeting.  His opponent, Rep. David Grimes (R), was also invited but did not attend.  Channel 12 (WSFA) was there and we were on the 10 pm news that night.

2)  The remainder of the meeting was devoted to preparations for hosting the Alabama NOW state conference in September.  These plans have been finalized:

Alabama NOW State Conference – a one-day event on September 18 at the Ken Baker Center.

Theme:  Writing Women Back into ALABAMA history.

Confirmed Speakers:

Mary Ann Neely, a historian, preservationist, author, and former educator.  She earned a degree in history at Huntingdon College before becoming a director of the Landmarks Foundation, which oversees Old Alabama Town.  She has written and edited several books on local history.

Tafeni English, Founder and Executive Director of Eve's Circle, Inc.  Tafeni has spoken to us before.  Eve's Circle is devoted to improving the quality of life and the prospects of teenaged women through mentoring, counseling, and tutoring.  Tafeni and Eve's Circle are on Facebook.

Amanda P. Hodge, Manager of Marketing and Membership, Auburn Alumni Association.  Amanda is passionate about starting a Family Law Committee in Alabama. There is a real crisis in our family courts and over 58,000 children nationwide are put into the hands of their identified abusers in family law.

Bill Mathews, Executive Secretary, Alabama Women's Hall of Fame and Vice President and General Counsel, Judson College.  The Hall of Fame, on the campus of Judson College, began in 1970 to honor the lives of outstanding women from the state of Alabama.

Schedule:  Registration 8:15 - 9:15 a.m.,  Conference 9:30 - 4:30.  There will be lunch break with box lunches ($10 per person).  Will adjourn to Larry's house for drinks and hors d'ouvre.
